Running for a Cause: A Personal Journey with The Oliver Fisher Neonatal Unit
Introduction:
Returning on May 12, 2024, for the 25th anniversary of The Oliver Fisher Neonatal Unit at Medway Maritime Hospital, the Oliver Fisher 10K & 5K isn't just about physical endurance; it's about rallying support and raising funds for the Oliver Fisher Special Care Baby Trust, an organization dedicated to providing crucial support for premature or sick babies and their families. The Nice Work team has been touched by the incredible work they do and wants to share Emma and Lucy's deeply personal story, which illustrates the profound impact of this remarkable unit and its supporting charity.
A Journey of Resilience:
On November 30, 2023, our sons were born at Medway Hospital, after being transferred from Southend Hospital, at only 24 weeks gestation. Our beloved Teddy was born sleeping; however, our resilient sons, Arthur and Ronnie, are still fighting their way through the NICU journey.
Gratitude Beyond Words:
During their 10-week stay at the Neonatal Unit, we will be forever grateful for the unwavering dedication of the staff and the invaluable support provided by the Oliver Fisher Special Care Baby Trust. From arranging Teddy's cremation to alleviating our financial burden with travel costs and ensuring a semblance of normalcy with Christmas presents and providing bereavement support, the charity went above and beyond during an incredibly challenging time.
A Pledge to Give Back:
Although this journey hasn’t been easy, we have some core memories that we will treasure forever. We genuinely don’t believe the boys would be where they are today without the help of the charity and staff alongside it, so we wanted to give something back as a thank you. What better way than persuading friends and family to run a 5k/10k run to support the Oliver Fisher Neonatal Unit? Our goal is twofold: to raise much-needed funds for the charity and to raise awareness, ensuring that other families facing similar situations receive the support they need for a positive future.
